Hold Your Breath: Air in Cinema

V–A–C Sreda online magazine continues its three-month programme dedicated to air in art and culture.

In this episode, we discuss air in cinema. What makes Soviet postwar film especially interesting from this perspective? How can a gust of wind inspire someone to become a director? Can a character’s inner state be conveyed through air? And in which films does breathing become an artistic device in its own right?

V–A–C Sreda editor Maxim Shibaev discussed these and other questions with Varvara Tirakhova, a cultural theorist, lecturer, and film critic; and Maksim Yershov, author of the I Saw the Screen Glow Telegram channel.
