“Are you into alt?”: The History of Subcultures

V–A–C Sreda online magazine presents its final three-month series of podcasts on significant cultural phenomena of the past that are now almost forgotten or considered extinct, but nevertheless continue to exist.

In this issue, we discuss the phenomenon of subcultures. How are they connected to the history of fashion? Who were the Macaronis, Teddy Boys, and Incroyables? What makes modern communities unique? And is emo really for sad people?

V–A–C Sreda editor Maxim Shibaev considers these and other questions alongside Nikita Zelezukhin, a fashion designer and lecturer at the Stieglitz Academy and Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg, and Tima Aller, a doctoral student in art and design and editor at V–A–C Press.
