The Cassette Phenomenon: Rewound with a Pencil

V–A–C Sreda online magazine continues its final three-month series of podcasts on significant cultural phenomena of the past that are now almost forgotten or considered extinct, but nevertheless continue to exist.

In this episode, we discuss cassettes. How and when did they appear? Why does interest in physical media persist in a world of music streaming? What is a magnetron, and can a DJ set be played with cassettes?

V–A–C Sreda editor Maxim Shibaev considers these and other questions alongside musician Nick Zavriev; engineer and owner of the Hanagasumi label Andrey Kurohtin; and DJ and founder of the Russian electronic label “GOST Zvuk” Ildar Zainetdinov.
