Creepy Water: On a Wave with a Mermaid

V–A–C Sreda online magazine, in collaboration with the audio platform Tolk, continues a three-month podcast series on water and its significance in culture, art and folklore.

In this episode, we talk about the image of mermaids in popular culture. What is “mermaidcore”? How are mermaids related to psychoanalysis and the phenomenon of the unconscious? And what does folklore, posthumanism and digital fashion have to do with it?

Maxim Shibaev, editor of V–A–C Sreda, discussed these and other questions with graduate students of the HSE Art and Design School: fashion theorist Elizaveta Kuznetsova, posthumanism researcher and creator of the Objet clothing brand Oksana Pertel, and practicing psychoanalyst and art historian Olga Lebedeva.
